Monsoon Season?

"But in a typhoon it's anybody's game."

~The Voice of the Texas State Fightin' Armadillos, Chuck Niederman,  in the 1991 film "Necessary Roughness"

Judging by the amount of standing water on the course, I would guess we had a typhoon blow through last night.  But rest assured it is gone and out of here for good.  The course is too wet for play as of 8:45 this morning, but the forecast calls for sun and the high for today should be around 65.  Hopefully the conditions will improve and allow for some play not too much later today.  If anyone is considering playing this morning, I would call the shop first to check on conditions.  We just can't seem to avoid the rain long enough to let our great course dry out!

I am going to lay off of trivia for this week, but should resume next week.  I need some time to lick my wounds after the last 2 questions, mighty attempts to stump everybody, were answered with relative ease by one of our many resident internet squires.  I am thinking of selling the naming rights to the weekly trivia question.  How does "The Dave Wells 'Iron Byron' Weekly Trivia Question Classic" sound?  Too verbose?  I am open for suggestions.....

Lastly, I have to say I am truly jealous of anyone that came last night for the Fat Tuesday Cajun Buffet.  I heard we had a good crowd for it.  I went downstairs "on business" and couldn't help but peek at the buffet as they had just set it up.  It smelled and looked unbelievably good.  Speaking of food, if you're not eating at the GCC and find yourself near Cooper-Young in the morning, stop in Stone Soup Cafe on Cooper and have yourself "The Big Rex".  It's like putting the opposite of Mississippi State's second half against Kentucky in your mouth.  For those of you that didn't get that reference, that means its really really good.  Thank me later.

I hope everybody has an awesome week!  See you soon!

Be My Valentine

Wednesday, February 15

Flowers flying cross the room
Vases smashed against the floor
Said "I'd rather be alone
Take your chocolates and go home"

Be my valentine

~February 14, Drive -By Truckers

I hope everyone had a great Valentine's Day.  My wife and I didn't plan ahead so we ended up randomly going out to a Mexican restaurant in Midtown.  Mexican food is not the first choice for most people when it comes to a "romantic" meal, so we were in and out of there in no time. Not to mention Mexican food is great, without fail.

The day after Valentine's Day is still a bit up in the air when it comes to the weather.  The forecast calls for a nice comfy high around 60, but chances of rain starting at 2 PM are around 50%.  I would suggest beating those odds by coming out in the morning and having a nice round of golf before the rain pushes through.  If that's not an option for you, have no fear.  The remainder of the week is looking pretty nice with sun, low chances for rain, and highs in the high 50's every day.  The course is looking great and I am amazed by the amount of green I see in the fairways.

I have to remind everybody that almost everything is on sale in the golf shop.  We need to clear some room out for all the new spring/summer merchandise that is arriving in early March, so come take advantage of the savings!

I tried to stump everybody with last week's trivia, but Dave Wells still managed to conquer me.  The answer was Dave's Dark Horse Tavern in Starkville, MS.  A place very near and dear to my heart.  The mice races were legendary.

Come out and see us!

Casey's fun fact of the day:  Golf has roots in Scotland.  In the 1500's, golf had grown so popular there that the King of Scotland banned the sport in favor of archery, claiming that an army of skilled archers were more valuable during an invasion by the English than an army of golfers.

Trivia:  According to legend, brothers Romulus and Remus founded the city of Rome in the first century B.C.  They were abandoned as young babies and were found and nursed by a she-wolf until they were later found and adopted by a human couple.  An alternate meaning of the Latin word for she-wolf caused some historians to believe that Romulus and Remus may have been cared for by a woman.  Name that woman's likely profession.

Golf Course is Closed on 2/12/2012

Unfortunately we will have to keep the golf course closed on Sunday, 2/12/2012.  We were hopeful that the temperatures would warm up enough but with the high only going to reach 38 and a low of 23 Sunday night the covers will remain where they are currently.  Our hopes are to reopen the course on Tuesday.  I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend and lets pray for warmer weather next weekend!

The clubhouse will be open both Saturday night and all day Sunday.  Please come join us for dinner on Saturday or breakfast & lunch on Sunday!  My favorite is still the 3 egg omelet with pancakes!

Thank You,

My Winter Luck has Ended!

February 10, 2012

Sunrise - 6:51 am / Sunset - 5:36 pm

10:45 hours of Golf Available Today! (Non this weekend!  Sorry!)

Get with the "Pro"gram!

Unfortunately my winter luck has run out and as I look out the window this morning all I see is black tarps on the greens.  We had a good run with the greens only being covered for four days so far this winter!  With rain this afternoon and a high of 35 and low of 20 tomorrow night the decision was made to cover the greens and close the golf course.  We will look very closely at Sunday and see if it is possible to open.  Our intial thought is that the course will remain closed until Tuesday.  On Sunday morning we will send an email out and update the website with the latest status of the course.

Covering Greens, Golf Course Closed until further notice!

So what to do on a cold weekend my first thought always goes to food.  I just checked the "Chefs" corner and my mouth is watering for Chef Ronnie's Crab stuffed Flounder!  Every week Ronnie updates the chef's corner on the website with the weekly specials!  This week he has:

Southwest Shrimp & Crab Quesadilla

Thai Chopped Salad

Crab Stuffed Flounder

Steak Au Poivre

Tiramisu

Yum!

You could always come hang out with Casey and me in the golf shop and watch some basketball or golf on the "Big Screen".  We always love some company!

Since my email Tuesday we have gained another new member to the GCC family!  Please join me in welcoming the NEW GCC member!  I would also like to Thank the member that helped in recruiting this NEW member.

The Day is Coming, The Day is Near

Wednesday, February 8, 2012

Lou Brown:  I think we're a contender right now.

Charlie Donovan:  You really believe that, don't you?

Lou Brown:  I know it.  All we need is something to bring it all together.

~from one of the best sports movies of all time, Major League

Things are starting to come together!  The Tigers are having a press conference today at noon to announce their move to the Big East Conference.  I immediately picture home basketball games in a raucous FedEx Forum against Cincinnati and Louisville, a home football game in a packed Liberty Bowl against West Virginia, and conference basketball tournaments in Madison Square Garden.  The invitation to join a BCS conference had been a long time coming for Tiger fans, and it really hasn't "sunk in" just yet.

January was the 4th warmest January on record.  I hope that the mild winter will indicate a mild summer as well.  Let's keep our fingers crossed.  The golf season is around the corner and if you haven't looked at the 2012 Tournament Schedule, I suggest you take a few minutes to do so.  It is packed with fun events for all ages, ladies and men.  The course is looking great and 2012 will be a home run for golf at the GCC.

Doug and his staff have done some great things in the clubhouse (including installing a big screen TV in the golf shop!) and they have now turned their attention to the pool area.  There is a renewed energy about the club with a spirit of continually improving the experience for members.  Also, we have added many new members over the last few weeks with our new membership initiative.  I can't wait to see what the future brings for this club.  Things are definitely looking up.

Trivia for a free 18 hole cart fee: You may have to get "resourceful" for this one.  Singer-songwriter Ryan Bingham was asked in an interview about the "diviest" bar he has ever played in.  Name that bar or even the town that bar was in.  First one to correctly answer wins the prize.

Groundhog's Day Eve

"You want a prediction about the weather?  You're asking the wrong Phil.  I'll give you a winter prediction.  It's gonna be cold, it's gonna be gray, and it's going to last you the rest of your life." ~ Weatherman Phil Connors, played by Bill Murray, in the film "Groundhog Day".

Here in the Mid-South we don't have to worry about what Punxsutawney Phil sees tomorrow.  We barely caught a fleeting glimpse of Ole Man Winter and prognosticators prognosticate that we won't be seeing much of him in the remainder of what we call "Winter".  For those of you that enjoy the cold weather, this has been a disappointing season.  But for golfers, it is the best you could ask for.  We had a record amount of rounds played in January, and it wasn't even close.  The weather has been very cooperative for the golf industry.  However, if you wake up tomorrow and your alarm clock is playing a Sonny and Cher song, expect an existential crisis for the next few months.

We are on the paths today as the course is a bit damp, but it feels great outside right now.  It is short sleeve warm and I even had the A/C on briefly this morning in the shop.  Come on out and have some fun on the course!

Casey Cass

Beautiful Sunday for Golf!

Currently we are under a frost delay but hope to open the course by 9:30 am.  The high today will be 57!

I look to see you soon!

Thank You,

Keith Penke

Rainy Day Blues

Thursday, January 26, 2012

Much like yesterday morning the overnight rains have left us with a soggy golf course.  The range and #1 fairway have the same amount of standing water as yesterday morning.  The forecast is the same- scattered showers possible all day with chances of rain between 15 and 65 percent.  If I didn't remember having a half-pound Colossus Burger and Red Velvet Cake at 3 Angels Diner on Broad (well worth the trip, y'all) and watching the Tigers destroy Rice last night, I would wonder if I ended up in a Germantown version of the Groundhog Day movie.

I again recommend calling me to check on the conditions if you feel the itch to play today. If we can avoid showers like we did yesterday the course will be enjoyable, but if we catch any significant rain it might be a sloppy mess.

Best golf since 1970

The Golf Course at Germantown Country Club was designed and built under the supervision of famous golf course designer and architect, J. Press Maxwell, in 1969. The Golf Course was opened along with the other club facilities in July of 1970.

Since the initial inception and construction of the 6,887 yard Championship Golf Course, many additions and changes to the course have taken place. Currently we have TifEagle grass on the greens and 419 Bermuda grass on all the fairways and collars.  Germantown Country Club has the finest putting surface all 12 months of the year of any club in the area.

Germantown Country Club has been selected to host the final Qualifying Rounds for the United States Open Golf Tournament by the USGA on four different occasions. We have also been host to national tournaments for both high school and inter-collegiate golf organizations.

The Club is proud to be a member of the PGA, USGA, TGA and the MGA. These organizations offer tournament competition in which many of our members participate.
